Weekend Trip to Bodega Bay

Tammy and I took a nice, relaxing trip to Bodega Bay this weekend. We stayed at the Inn at the Tides, which was a little pricey, but the heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and view were rad.

Saturday we explored Bodega Head and saw all kinds of wildlife including a Harrier and a velvety Mole (mysteriously waddling around the surface). We also scoped out birds at the "Hole in the Head", a big freshwater spring on the bayside of the Head, where PG&E almost built the nation's first nuclear power plant. It's a lucky thing they started that project but didn't finish, because now all kinds of waterbirds visit the resulting pond and marshlands.

Sunday we drove up to Jenner (at the mouth of the Russian River) and then back South along the Sonoma Coast. We spotted grey whales at Goat Rock beach (which signs declared "one of the most dangerous in California") and then again later at Bodega Dunes. Pinnipeds, mostly Sea Lions, were plentiful as well.

We saw so much great wildlife that we're definitely going to return. Next time we'll probably camp at one of the numerous campgrounds along the coast and save some $$$. Still, this mixed half-spa/half hiking weekend was awesome.
